Dispersion of the Break Energy in the GRB Internal Shock Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
In order to investigate the dispersion of the spectral break energy in gammaray bursts, we simulate internal shocks, including effects of shell-splitting after shell collisions and the Thomson optical depth due to electron–positron pairs produced by synchrotron photons. We produce pseudo observational data and estimate the break energy. If the distribution of initial Lorentz factors of shells has only one peak, many pulses with a break energy much lower than the typical observed value should be detected, while the effect of the Thomson optical depth reduces pulses with a break energy of > 1 MeV. If the Lorentz factor distribution has multiple peaks, the distribution of the break energy can be consistent with observations.

Pair Creation by Very High Energy Photons in Gamma-Ray Bursts: A Unified Picture for Various Energetics of GRBs
The extreme energetics of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990123 has revealed that some of GRBs emit quite a large amount of energy, and total energy release from GRBs seems to change from burst to burst by a factor of 10–10 as Eγ,iso ∼ 10 52−55 erg, where Eγ,iso is the observed GRB energy when radiation is isotropic. If all GRBs are triggered by similar events, such a wide dispersion in energy relea...
متن کاملPrompt Gev Emission from Residual Collisions in Gamma-ray Burst Outflows: Evidence from Fermi Observations of Grb 080916c
The γ-rays from γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be produced by internal shocks driven by small timescale, ∼ 1 ms, variation in the GRB outflows, and a pair-production spectral cutoff is generally expected around the GeV range. However, the observed optical flashes accompanying GRBs suggest that the delayed residual collisions due to large timescale variation continue to accelerate electrons...
متن کاملPoynting-flux powered GRB outflows: spectral predictions
Production of the gamma-ray spectrum of a Poynting-flux dominated GRB outflow is investigated. The very high magnetic field strengths (super-equipartition) in such a flow lead to very efficient synchrotron emission. In contrast with internal shocks, dissipation of magnetic energy by reconnection is gradual and does not produce the spectrum of cooling electrons associated with shock acceleration...
متن کاملA Jet Model with a Hard Electron Distribution for the Afterglow of Grb 000301c
The parameters of the GRB 000301c afterglow are determined within the usual framework of synchrotron emission from relativistic ejecta, through fits to the available radio-to-optical data. It is found that 1) the jet energy after the GRB phase is ∼ 3 × 10 erg, 2) the initial opening angle of the jet is ∼ 13, 3) the medium that decelerates the afterglow has a density ∼ 25 cm, 4) the power-law di...
متن کاملConfirming the γ–ray burst spectral–energy correlations in the era of multiple time breaks
We test the spectral–energy correlation including the new bursts detected (mostly) by Swift with firm measurements of their redshifts and peak energy. The problem of identifying the jet breaks is discussed in the complex and multibreak/flaring X–ray light curves observed by Swift. We use the optical data as the most reliable source for the identification of the jet break, since the X–ray flux m...
